This line acknowledges that — it’s not saying ‘do X or Y and it’ll be great again’, the problem might be complex and idiosyncratic — while holding onto the attitude that the perceived powerlessness doesn’t mean you’re off the hook, because you’re probably making a higher-level mistake about optimizing the wrong thing, or not thinking about that and letting other people or factors determine what gets optimized for in your life.
