I disagree. I also edit a lot of posts and way too many people use it way too much. It’s a way of being careful of making it sound like it’s not you saying what you think.

It has its purpose, but most people aren’t even trying to write at the level where it would come in handy. They just clutter simple texts with it.

For advanced writers, yes, absolutely, a useful tool, but the reading level most writing ends up at? There’s really no need.
