I debate my own headlines in my head a lot. I feel that for big, feature pieces that I spend days on, where I know the article itself will drive a lot of sharing, etc., I can “afford” to go with creative, but maybe not click-y headlines.
Most of my shorter ones are still “hooking” people in. I then try to deliver with authenticity in the article itself. People tend to look past catchy headlines if you do that.
Also, there’s a critical mass where I think you can afford to pick whatever headline you want. I see it at about 100k followers. Will probably spend a year or two getting there at some point.
